EL SHADDAI VANCOUVER CHAPTER 13TH
ANNIVERSARY
When I was 21 years old, my brother who was 25 committed suicide. I was closest to him in my family and the last one to see him alive.
This hurt me deeply and I also began to have thoughts about suicide. I
remember my two sisters and parents were very worried about me. I went through
a period of painful, heartbreaking darkness. Consequently, I indulged in illicit
drugs and alcohol. This, in turn, caused me to fall deeper into the depths of
desolation, despair and sadness.
Somehow, over a gradual period of time, I managed to clean up my act on my own, (although
looking back God had His hand on me). I decided that I would no longer be involved
with my old friends who indulged in drunkenness and revelry.
Last year, I met a Mexican friend. I began
to attend Sunday Mass with him. The best way I can describe him is to quote Frances
Hogan, from the Lenten Mission: “If you get close to someone who truly
loves God, you also will be inspired”. This Mexican friend influenced and
inspired me in a huge way.
A short time later I began to attend Sunday meetings with the El Shaddai Prayer Group
in Victoria - to see and feel the heartfelt worship, the fellowship, the life and energy of people who love the Lord, it is
an inspirational experience. This community of the El Shaddai Prayer Group will
forever have a special place in my heart. I feel so blessed by God that He has
sent such wonderful people into my life, to keep me always close to Him.
And here I am, I just had my confirmation at the last Easter Vigil. Now, I am alive and passionate about my faith in God. My prayer
life, understanding of my faith, and my faith itself have deepened immensely.
Our goal is to allow Jesus to completely transform our hearts, minds, words and deeds. Now I quote the words of Blessed Mother Teresa: “Put yourself completely under
the influence of Jesus … Let Him think His thoughts in your mind and do His work with your hands.”
I closing, I would like to repeat the words of our Blessed Virgin Mary: “My soul
glorifies
the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.”
God bless you!!!
